everything I read so far contemplates climbing with someone else

Can't you just go out somewhere and climb by yourself?
Or is there no way to do it?

well you need someone to belay you..(pretty much hold the rope incase you fall). unless your doing bouldering, in which case you should have someone spotting you.

while some people choose to climb alone, there are repercusions. My step-uncle Charles Durrig died on Mt.Whitney two days ago. I am considering haveing a shirt printed to wear when I climb to remember him. He had a permit that was about to expire and his buddy backed out, rescue personel suspect he fell less than 100 ft. and we are still waiting for them to release the body to his family. so... Climb On !!!.. but I will ALWAYS climb with a buddy.

it depends, if you are talking about bouldering you can just slap a pad down and work on your technique. if your talking about soloing that's another story. if you fall your risking serious injury or death, even if you solo an easy route stuff happens. be safe

I think there's only one thing that's more dangerous when climbing then making a simple mistake, and that's climbing with someone who thinks they are simply too brilliant and can't make a mistake.

I don't know that it's something that should be encouraged, but if you're interested, drop me a PM and I can share a couple of techniques that I've used to minimize risks of climbing alone. Your safest bet is to always find an active local forum and score a climbing partner, but when you gotta climb, you gotta climb. Just remember... there are bold climbers, and there are old climbers, but there are no old bold climbers.

I recently wrote a post about risk and aplinism which delves into soloing a little bit and seems pertinent to this thread.
