Mt. Shasta speed ascent record, Dan set it on the Hotlum-Bolam Ridge Route. First in history to speed climb this route. FSA (first speed ascent) as it's being called in the Shasta community.

Hiring former Shasta Mountain Guides Ned Bair and Jonathan Earle to do the timing from the start to the summit. Starting of climb was at the very low point called 'Northgate Trailhead' at the parking lot 6800 feet elevation. To the summit of 14,162 feet elevation. Great elevation gain, steep icy route, crevasse danger. Difficult Gawry Variation taken from 13,500' about to the summit, difficult rock, route finding.

The Oregon Peak Adventures company timed his MT Hood speedclimb, 2003 record. From Government Camp to the Summit and back to Government Camp in 2h:58m up and 4h:47m roundtrip.
Officially timed.
Still the current record in 2008.
Oregon Peak Adventures website www.oregonpeakadventures.com

Article on Howitt's Hood and Adams records. Adams one also timed officially. 2h:39m on South Spur route from 6000' elevation to the summit oneway. Done in 2003 also, still the current record. First documented speedclimb on Adams since the 1960's.

Mount Hood in June from the parking lot.

This is where the race start for Dan Howitt was from. It's the Timberline Lodge lower area parking lot. 5,900 feet in elevation. Maybe slightly lower.

I'll try to draw in an approximate route line for the route. Called the South Route.

Couple route area pictures.
This one's awesome. Foreboding looking at climbing it.

The Chute. I think there's one above here with, Dan Howitt, on The Chute with his dog Caddis.
